Pelvic floor physiotherapy involves both the assessment and treatment of pelvic and structures within the pelvis. The pelvic floor is made of muscles, ligaments, fascia and nerves. These structures play an important role in bladder/bowel and sexual function. Physiotherapy of these areas involves assessment and treatment by our trained pelvic floor physiotherapist.
When Do I need Pelvic floor physiotherapy:
- Leakage of bladder when you sneeze, laugh, exercise or cough
- Pain with sexual intercourse
- Increased frequency of visits to washroom to pee
- Persistent pain in pelvis area, low back or hips
- Heaviness or pressure in pelvic area
- Pain in testicular region
- Pain while voiding or bowel movement
- Recovering from gynecological procedure or having a procedure
- Women whom are pregnant or recently postpartum often benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy
Conditions we treat:
- Stress incontinence: involuntary voiding of urine due to increased intra-abdominal pressure examples: laughing, sneezing, coughing, jumping
- Urgency: Strong urge to urinate or defecate with difficulty to control
- Pelvic pain: Pain within and around pelvic area
- Overactive bladder: Frequent urination
- Painful intercourse: pain during sexual intercourse
- Nocturia: night time leakage in children (bed wetting)
- Pre and post-surgical cases
What to expect during the session:
The assessment is typically 60 mins long and involves thorough history taking to understand and discuss your current concerns.
With informed consent our pelvic floor therapist will perform a comprehensive assessment of the joints and tissue affecting the area. This may include internal and external examinations to identify the affected tissues that may be contributing to your urinary, bowel or pelvic pain symptoms.
Based on the assessment, your pelvic floor therapist will help you to make a treatment plan depending on your goal and symptoms.
